Drill Press #1: Overview and Plans

A couple months back, I bought a drill press and a bunch of other things for around $40 at MAGLab's garage sale.  The drill press sat at the makerspace for a few weeks before it was mistaken for abandoned and another member took it home to use it.  After clearing up the miscommunication, it ended up at my house where it has been sitting for about a month now.

Here's the specs:
  • Manhattan Supply Company (MSC) "Heavy Duty" drill press
  • Model 951210
  • Motor: 1/2 HP, 1 phase, 120V, AC induction motor
  • 5 Speeds (at 60 Hz): 460, 870, 1155, 1670, 2500 rpm
  • Accepts a Morse Taper #2 arbor

Some interesting facts:
Apparently, Manhattan Supply Company eventually changed to the current MSC Direct.  Because this brand and model are relatively old, spec sheets and manuals are hard to come by.  This isn't much of a problem seeing as how all the relevant information can be found without a manual.

Goals for this drill press:
  • Add a 1/2" drill chuck
  • Add some sort of drill vise/fixturing table
  • Make a drill chuck removal tool
  • Maximum Total Indicated Runout (TIR) of 0.010"
Action Plan:
  • Measure current T.I.R. with MAGLab's dial indicator.
  • Spec a drill chuck
    • Preferred option: Jacob's 33BA 1/2" drill chuck
    • Cost effective option: Harbor Freight 1/2" lathe drill chuck
  • Design/Fabricate or Spec a drill press table and vise
  • Fabricate a drill chuck removal tool
